Study in Canada

Overview

Most international students need a study permit to study at a designated learning institution in Canada. Apply before you travel.

The official IRCC page sets out six stages: check eligibility, get documents, apply, complete post-application steps, prepare for arrival and meet your permit conditions.

Admission steps

1. Choose a program at a designated learning institution (DLI) from the official list.
2. Apply to the institution and get your letter of acceptance.
3. Accept the offer. Usually you must also pay tuition in part or in full before the school issues the PAL or TAL.
4. Gather your documents and apply for the study permit online.
5. Complete biometrics and other post-application steps, then prepare for arrival.

Documents you usually need

• Transcripts and certificates
• Language proof where the institution requires it
• Statement of purpose if requested
